Profile (Overview)

The National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) is the national and regional specialist centre for conditions of the brain, spine, nerves and muscles. NNI offers treatment for over 20 subspecialties, including stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, brain tumour and brain injury. NNI operates out of two main campuses (Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Singapore General Hospital (SGH)) and four partner hospitals (Changi General Hospital (CGH), KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH), Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) and Sengkang General Hospital (SKH)).NNI is a member of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre. The National Neuroscience Research Institute Singapore (NNRIS) is a joint institute by NNI and Duke-NUS Medical School. NNRIS synergises expertise from both organisations to develop research programmes, integrate resources and new research facilities for experiments.

Prof Lo Yew Long

The National Neuroscience Institute's Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Medical Affairs & Quality Management) is Professor Lo Yew Long. In 1988, he received his degree from the National University of Singapore. He began working in the neurology department at Singapore General Hospital in 1994 and finished his postgraduate fellowship in clinical neurophysiology there in 1998. Since 1999, he has been a fellow of the Singapore Academy of Medicine. Currently, he holds the positions of Head and Senior Consultant Neurologist at the National Neuroscience Institute (SGH Campus), Professor at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, and Adjunct Professor at the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Medicine. Clinical Neurophysiology is a field in which Professor Lo is involved. In addition to serving as the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology's representative, he was the founding president of the Clinical Neurophysiology Society (Singapore). In 2005, 2015, and 2010, he was invited to speak at the World Congress of Neurology, the European Congress of Clinical Neurophysiology, and the International Congress of Clinical Neurophysiology. A/Prof Au received his education at the National Neuroscience Institute after graduating from the National University of Singapore. He undertook a two-year Movement Disorders Fellowship at the Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre in Vancouver, Canada, following the completion of his Advanced Specialist Training. The Toronto Western Hospital in Toronto, Canada, is where he received more training in electrophysiology for movement disorders. The clinical treatment of individuals with Parkinson disease and movement disorders is A/Prof Au's area of expertise. He has received training in injecting patients with botulinum toxin for a variety of movement disorders, including spasticity, dystonia, hemifacial spasm, and blepharospasm. Professor EK Tan is Senior Consultant Neurologist at the National Neuroscience Institute, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Academic Affairs), and Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (a joint initiative with Imperial College London). Prof. Tan has worked on numerous committees for the International Movement Disorders Society (MDS) and is a founding member of the MDS Asian Oceanic Section. He is an editor of the European Journal of Neurology, Parkinsonism Related Disorders, and Parkinson's disease Journal. Assoc Adj Prof. David Low received his training at the Irish Royal College of Surgeons. In 2000, he received his medical degree (MBBCh), and he then went back to Singapore for his basic surgery postgraduate study. His basic surgical training was completed in 2004, and the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh awarded him membership in general surgery (MRCS Ed). He also finished his Master of Medicine in Surgery (MMed), which was awarded to him by the National University of Singapore, during this time. Following his interest in neurosurgery, Adj Assoc Prof Low completed his advanced surgical training at the National Neuroscience Institute (Singapore), where he worked at the Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and KK Women's and Children's. In Edinburgh, after completing his training in neurosurgery, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). He received a scholarship from the Ministry of Health's Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP) in 2010, and in 2011 he enrolled in a one-year fellowship in paediatric neurosurgery at Toronto, Canada's renowned Hospital for Sick Children.
