Three hospitals—Hôtel-Dieu, Hôpital Notre-Dame, and Hôpital Saint-Luc—merged to form the CHUM. The organisation was formally founded on October 1st, 1996. The government, the Regional Board of Health and Social Services of Montreal-Centre, and the University of Montreal all signed the memorandum of understanding together. One of the biggest healthcare development projects in North America is the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM), which has over 400 clinics and examination rooms, 39 operating rooms, and 772 individual rooms. The hospital complex consists of three interconnected main buildings (a clinical and logistical support building, an outpatient center, and a diagnostic, therapeutic, and inpatient wing) with a total of 25 floors, five of which are underground.
