BIOGRAPHY
At The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research, Professor Ian Smith teaches cancer medicine. Additionally, he oversees The Royal Marsden's Breast Unit. Before beginning his career at The Royal Marsden, Professor Smith had his training at Edinburgh and Harvard. He has spent many years specializing in the medical management of breast cancer and, up until recently, lung cancer. He has pioneered the use of pre-operative medical treatment prior to surgery for big breast malignancies. His main research interests are in the discovery of innovative treatments for breast cancer, particularly in its early stages. Former Chairman of the Association of Cancer Physicians and the Lung Cancer Group of the UK National Cancer Research Institute is Professor Smith. He serves on the steering committees of numerous significant worldwide clinical research studies and most recently had a key role in the creation of Herceptin, a drug used to treat early breast cancer. Over 350 of his research publications have been published, and he frequently gives lectures abroad.
