Dr. Kumud Kumar Dhital, Program Director of Sparsh Hospital's Heart and Lung Transplantation Unit, is a highly competent and experienced physician. He has over 25 years of expertise in Cardiothoracic Surgery and 25 years of experience in Heart and Lung Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support Therapy from his work at renowned institutions in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Australia. Furthermore, a specialist in pulmonary endarterectomy for patients with persistent thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Dhital is well recognised across the world as the surgical pioneer of DCD (Donation after Circulatory Death) Heart Transplantation, the first of which was done in 2014 at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He headed the team as the primary surgeon from the first organ retrieval until the DCD transplant process. His pioneering work was recognised and appreciated by thoracic transplant programmes in the United Kingdom and Europe. Over 200 similar heart transplants have been performed worldwide. As part of the multinational INSPIRE study, Dr. Dhital was also essential in demonstrating the effectiveness of machine perfusion of donor lungs. Throughout his career, Dr. Dhital has pushed the boundaries of what is feasible in the field of transplant surgery. His considerable research expertise, interests, and academic publications are all geared toward enhancing our understanding and management of cardiopulmonary failure. He is an Oxford University medical alumni who has worked in top hospitals in the UK, Europe, and Australia and has received various accolades and honours.
