Retinopathy of Prematurity
Premature newborns are affected with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a retinal vasoproliferative condition. Despite advances in newborn care and management recommendations, ROP continues to be a primary cause of childhood blindness across the world.
Disease Signs and Symptoms:
- Leukocoria is a term for white pupils.
- Nystagmus is a term for abnormal eye movements.
- Strabismus is the medical term for crossed eyes.
- Myopia is a term for severe nearsightedness.
Disease Causes:
Premature newborns' retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye condition caused by faulty blood vessel development in the light-sensitive region of their eyes (retina). ROP mostly affects babies who were born before week 31 of pregnancy and weighed less than 2.75 pounds (approximately 1,250 grammes) at birth.
Disease Diagnosis:
The only method to tell whether a baby has ROP is to look into their eyes and look for abnormalities in the retina. Your baby's eyes will be examined by ophthalmologists who are skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of ROP. Your baby's pupils will be dilated with eye drops during this test so that the retina may be examined.
Disease Treatment:
Laser therapy is the usual treatment for severe ROP, and it involves burning away the region around the border of the retina that is devoid of normal blood vessels. This treatment usually preserves vision in the central region of the visual field at the expense of peripheral vision.
