Package Description
Tracheostomy:
Tracheostomy (tray-key-OS-tuh-me) is a hole at the front of the neck that surgeons make into the windpipe (trachea). To maintain the hole open for breathing, a tracheostomy tube is inserted. Tracheotomy is the medical word for the surgical operation that creates this aperture.
When the normal route for breathing is obstructed or diminished, a tracheostomy offers an airway to assist you breathe. When health problems necessitate the long-term use of a machine (ventilator) to help you breathe, a tracheostomy is often required. When the airway is abruptly obstructed, such as after a serious injury to the face or neck, an emergency tracheotomy is performed.
When a tracheostomy is no longer required, it is surgically closed or allowed to heal. A tracheostomy is a permanent procedure for some people.
