A lymph node biopsy is a procedure that examines your lymph nodes for illness. Lymph nodes are tiny, oval-shaped structures that are found throughout your body. They're most typically located in the armpits, groyne, and neck, adjacent to internal organs including the stomach, intestines, and lungs.
Lymph nodes are a component of your immune system that assist your body in recognising and fighting infections. A lymph node may enlarge as a result of an illness in another part of your body. Lymph nodes that are swollen might look as a bump beneath your skin.
Disease Overview:
Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system. Lymphoma begins when healthy B cells, T cells, or NK cells in the lymphatic system change and grow out of control, which may form a tumor.
Lymphoma can spread rapidly from the lymph nodes to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system. As cancerous lymphocytes spread into other tissues, the immune system cannot defend against infections as effectively.
Signs and Symptoms:
Signs and symptoms of lymphoma may include:
- Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin.
- Persistent fatigue.
- Fever.
- Night sweats.
- Shortness of breath.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Itchy skin.
Disease Causes:
Doctors aren't sure what causes lymphoma. But it begins when a disease-fighting white blood cell called a lymphocyte develops a genetic mutation. The mutation tells the cell to multiply rapidly, causing many diseased lymphocytes that continue multiplying.
Diagnosis:
Your doctor will perform a physical exam and may order blood tests or lymph node biopsy to help evaluate your condition. If lymphoma is diagnosed, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture, chest x-ray, body CT, PET, bone scan, body MRI or abdominal ultrasound may be used to look for enlarged lymph nodes throughout the body and determine whether the lymphoma has spread.
Disease Treatment:
Treatment depends on the type and stage of the lymphoma as well as your age and overall health. Some types of lymphoma may only require monitoring while others may require chemotherapy, radiation therapy, radioimmunotherapy, biologic therapy or stem cell transplant.
Lymph Node Biopsy: With a lymph node biopsy, your doctor may remove the entire lymph node, or take a tissue sample from the swollen lymph node. Once the doctor removes the node or sample, they send it to a pathologist in a lab, who examines the lymph node or tissue sample under a microscope.
