Package Description
Ankle Arthroscopy:
Ankle arthroscopy is a procedure that examines or repairs the tissues inside or around your ankle using a small camera and surgical equipment. An arthroscope is the name for the camera. The treatment allows your doctor to diagnose issues with your ankle and make repairs without having to make deeper cuts in the skin and tissue.
Disease Overview:
Ankle arthritis
Damaged or worn cartilage at the joint that links the foot to the leg causes ankle arthritis. Injury, wear and tear, deformity, or inflammation are all possibilities. The key therapeutic techniques in the early stages include activity moderation, weight loss, rest, and acetaminophen.
Arthritis is a broad phrase that refers to a collection of over 100 disorders. The term "arthritis" refers to inflammation of the joints. Inflammation (swelling) in and around the joints is a symptom of arthritis. Inflammation can cause pain, stiffness, and edoema. Arthritis is an inflammation of a joint and its surrounding soft tissues that can be acute or persistent. Arthritis causes progressive joint degradation when the smooth "cushioning" cartilage in joints wears away, causing the bones to rub against one another. The soft tissues in the joints may also begin to deteriorate. Arthritis is a painful condition that can lead to restricted mobility, loss of joint function, and abnormalities in the afflicted joints.
There are 28 bones and more than 30 joints in each foot. Arthritis most commonly affects the following foot joints:
- The ankle and shinbone connect at this joint.
- The heel bone, the inner mid-foot bone, and the outside mid-foot bone are the three joints of the foot.
- The big toe's and foot bone's joint.
Disease Signs and Symptoms:
The following are common symptoms of foot and ankle arthritis:
- Tenderness or discomfort.
- Reduced mobility or capacity to walk.
- There is a stiffness in the joint.
- The joint is swollen.
Disease Causes:
The deterioration of cartilage in the ankle joint causes ankle arthritis. It can be caused by a variety of things, including trauma (like a car accident), autoimmune illnesses (like rheumatoid arthritis), and infection.
Disease Diagnosis:
The following will almost certainly be included in a diagnosis of foot and ankle arthritis:
- A preliminary medical history in which the clinician inquires about the onset and location of the pain, as well as aggravating or relieving variables.
- A gait analysis is a test in which a healthcare expert assesses your stride and walking style.
- X-rays.
Disease Treatment:
Arthritis of the foot and ankle can be treated in a variety of ways. The following are non-surgical options for treating foot and ankle arthritis:
- Controlling one's weight.
- Custom-made shoes or orthotics are available.
- Supportive inserts for the ankle and foot.
- Supportive bracing for the joints.
- To relieve tension on the afflicted joint, use a cane or walker.
- Physical therapy is a type of treatment that involves the use of
- Anti-inflammatory medicines are used to minimise joint swelling.
- Analgesics are pain relievers.
- Injections of steroid medicine into the joints.
Foot and ankle arthritis may necessitate more than one type of surgery. Depending on the kind and severity of your arthritis, your doctor can choose which form of surgery is appropriate for you. Surgical options for foot and ankle arthritis include the following:
Arthroscopic surgery can be beneficial in the early stages of arthritis. An arthroscope (a little device approximately the size of a pencil) is introduced into a joint during arthroscopic surgery. A surgeon watches a picture projected by the equipment on a monitor. The surgeon can next clean the joint region using small forceps, knives, and shavers.
Any foreign tissues or bony outgrowths (spurs) in the joint can be removed using arthroscopic surgery.
Fusion surgery, also known as arthrodesis, includes the use of rods, pins, screws, or plates to fuse the bones together. The bones are welded together after healing.
Joint replacement surgery: In this procedure, artificial implants are utilised to replace the ankle joint. It is only performed in rare circumstances.
