Package Description
ACL or PCL Avulsion Fixation Arthroscopic Open Surgery:
Avulsion fractures of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are responsible for the majority of injuries surrounding the knee joint, and if left untreated, can result in considerable impairment. They are produced by a direct strike across the distal end of the femur with the knee flexed or by strong hyperextension of the knee.
The most frequent solitary PCL lesion is posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fractures, which are a form of avulsion fracture of the knee. This usually entails varying degrees of separation of the PCL's posterior tibial insertion.
Arthoscopic suture fixation with fibre wires can effectively repair ACL or PCL avulsion fractures. It has the potential to improve knee function and stability.
Disease Overview:
PCL injuries
The PCL may be torn, despite being bigger and stronger than the ACL. PCL rips account for fewer than 20% of all knee ligament injuries. Injury to the PCL can also cause damage to the other ligaments and cartilage in the knee. A fragment of underlying bone can also be broken away by the ligament in rare situations.
One of the four primary ligaments in your knee is the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). These four ligaments work together to keep your knee joint from moving too much.
Disease Signs and Symptoms
Unlike a damaged anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which can create a "pop" and significant pain, a torn PCL might just cause swelling and minor discomfort in the knee. Over the course of a few days or weeks, these symptoms will go away.
If you've torn the PCL plus one or more other knee ligaments, you may have the following symptoms:
- Swelling is severe.
- The knee's inability to bear any weight.
Disease Causes:
Hyperextension of the knee is one cause of PCL damage. This might happen as a result of athletic activities such as leaping. A hit to the knee when it is flexed, or bent, can potentially cause PCL damage. This can occur as a result of a hard landing during sports or a fall, or as a result of an automobile accident.
A PCL injury occurs when the posterior cruciate ligament is damaged or torn.
PCL damage is caused by a variety of factors.
- A high-force trauma to the knee, such as from a vehicle accident or contact sports, is the most common cause of PCL injuries.
- Football \Soccer \Hockey
- Non-contact activities, such as gymnastics or skiing, can also cause PCL injuries, although they are less prevalent.
Risk factors for PCL damage
- PCL injuries are more common in athletes who participate in contact sports.
Disease Diagnosis:
Your doctor will initially ask you how the knee injury occurred and what position your leg was in at the time of injury in order to identify a PCL rupture.
After getting a complete medical history, the doctor will examine your knee to determine ligament stability.
He or she may also request tests to determine the degree of the damage to your PCL, such as x-rays and an MRI scan of the knee.
Disease Treatment:
The following factors influence PCL damage treatment:
The amount of the knee ligament injury.
- It's your age.
- The degree of activity you want to achieve.
- PCL damage therapy that does not need surgery
Nonsurgical PCL tear therapy at UPMC Sports Medicine includes activities to improve:
- Knee strength is important.
- Flexibility.
- Balance.
Your doctor may also advise you to:
- Reduce your activities until the symptoms of your PCL injury have subsided.
- Several times a day, ice the knee.
- Use a bandage or wrap to compress your knee.
- Raise your knee above your heart's level.
- Reduce swelling and accelerate recovery by using anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen.
- Injury prevention using PCL
Unfortunately, the majority of PCL rips occur as a result of sports or accidents that are generally unavoidable.
However, the following suggestions may help you avoid a PCL injury:
- Perform strengthening and rehabilitation exercises for the upper leg muscles that protect your knee (quadriceps and hamstrings).
- Maintain a regular stretching schedule.
- When playing sports or exercising, maintain good form.
